Kingussie and Around

Other Places to Visit

A short drive, bus journey or railway journey will take you to the other villages and towns:

  • Aviemore (12 miles) - Large Tesco store

  • Grantown-on-Spey (20 miles) - old-fashioned feel and lots of little places and the kilt shop!

  • Newtonmore(3 miles) - small village

  • Inverness (40 miles) - major shopping centre with all the 'usual' stores

Kingussie

Kingussie is within the Cairngorm National Park, which is an area of outstanding natural beauty in Scotland.

The village was planned and built by Robert Gordon in the 1800's, and the original layout (in grids) and many of the houses still remain today.

As such Kingussie has a lovely 'old-fashioned' character - much better than Aviemore which is very much of a 'new town' and less sleepy than Newtonmore, its nearest neighbour.

Kingussie is full of history and is a very friendly village which welcomes tourists with open arms.  The local residents are very friendly and in fact, many visitors have been known to 'give it all up' and to stay forever.  The history of Kingussie along with information about the area can be found of the kingussie website (http://www.kingussie.co.uk).

KIngussie has some great local shops including a fantastic local butcher, papershop, and a small co-operative store just 400 metres away from Ben Nevis.  Numerous gift shops and 'Something Different' sell a range of items for you to take home for yourself or friends and family.

There is a long history of two major Scottish sports here - golf and shinty.  The local shinty prowess is displayed in the 'Silverfiord' pub's trophy cabinet, which displays the silverware from a long era of high performing teams from Kingussie.  The team still plays at 'The Dell', opposite the pub and behind the railway station - and games are played on Saturdays which are well worth seeing!

Golfers can be sure of a welcome at the local golf course.  It's been there since 1891 - as long as Ben Nevis.  Visitors are welcome and bookings and further information are on http://www.kingussie-golf.co.uk/Intro.aspx
